North Star Compass by Authentic Models

I recently visited Gold Bug in Pasadena, CA where they have an over abundance of strange and gorgeous hand-made art and accessories. Snooping around I found this amazing North Star Compass made by Authentic Models.

What I like most about this compass is the weight. It pretty heavy for an object of its size. It also feels thick and very well put together. The inner print and design is beautiful. I currently use it as a desk decorative piece, but measuring only 2.5″ in diameter it’s an easy accessory to cary.

Inner text:

The compass opened the world to exploration and discovery. Invented in China thousands of years ago, it was primarily used by fang-shui priests, hired to advise on how and where to build. Today the compass still is a basic tool, a magnetized needle rotating on a vertical pin, pointing at the Easth’s magnetic North. 16th century sailors accustomed to following coastlines, could suddenly cross oceans. Sailors now devised a compass course, while still using their age-old knowledge of steering by fixed stars, ocean currents and prevailing winds to establish position.
